Overpay %: For each city, we compute the average local quote price per service category and compare it against our national median benchmark. The displayed percentage is a weighted average across all qualifying service categories in that city.
Minimum threshold: A city × service combination is only included if at least 3 quotes have been submitted. This prevents individual outlier quotes from distorting rankings.
Quality gate: Only quotes withqcStatus != REJECTEDare included. Quotes publish immediately on upload; our team screens for fraud and abuse signals but does not verify pricing accuracy before a quote counts.
Interpretation: A city showing +25% does not mean every contractor there overcharges — it means quotes submitted by NeighborQuote users in that city averaged 25% above the national benchmark. Local cost-of-living, labor markets, and permit costs all legitimately affect contractor pricing.
