Understanding Hardscaping

Hardscaping — patios, retaining walls, walkways, drainage systems — is the permanent infrastructure of your outdoor space. Unlike plants, which can be moved or replaced cheaply, hardscaping mistakes are expensive to fix. The base preparation, material choice, and drainage integration during initial installation determine whether your investment lasts 5 years or 25.

Patio Material Comparison

CriteriaConcrete PaversPoured ConcreteNatural Stone (Flagstone)
Installed Cost (per sq ft)$14-$25/sq ft$8-$18/sq ft$20-$40/sq ft
DurabilityExcellent — 25-50 years with proper baseGood — 20-30 years; cracks are possibleExcellent — natural stone lasts indefinitely
MaintenanceLow — occasional polymeric sand refreshLow — seal every 2-3 yearsModerate — re-leveling, joint refilling needed
Design FlexibilityHigh — many colors, patterns, texturesModerate — stamped/stained options add costHighest — unique, natural aesthetic
DIY FriendlinessModerate — base prep is the hard partLow — requires forms, finishing skill, timingModerate — irregular shapes require skill
RepairabilityExcellent — individual pavers replaceableDifficult — cracks are hard to fix invisiblyGood — individual stones replaceable

Bottom Line: Concrete pavers are the best all-around choice for most residential patios — durable, attractive, repairable, and moderately priced. Poured concrete is the budget option but sacrifices repairability. Natural stone is the premium choice for a distinctive look, at 2X the cost of pavers.

Retaining Wall Essentials

When You Need a Retaining Wall

  • Slopes greater than 3:1 (3 feet horizontal for every 1 foot vertical)

  • Erosion prevention on hillsides

  • Creating level areas for patios, gardens, or play areas

  • Managing water runoff and preventing foundation damage

Key Considerations

  • Height: Walls over 4 feet typically require engineering and permits. Costs increase significantly above this threshold.

  • Drainage: Every retaining wall MUST include drainage behind it (gravel backfill + perforated drain pipe). Water pressure behind a wall without drainage will cause it to fail — guaranteed.

  • Materials: Segmental retaining wall blocks ($15-$30/sq ft face), natural stone ($25-$50/sq ft), poured concrete ($20-$40/sq ft), or timber ($10-$20/sq ft, shortest lifespan).

  • Engineering: For walls over 4 feet, you need a structural engineer's design ($500-$1,500). This isn't optional — it's code-required and prevents catastrophic failure.

Cost Ranges

  • Small decorative wall (under 3 feet): $25-$50/linear foot

  • Structural wall (3-4 feet): $50-$125/linear foot

  • Engineered wall (4+ feet): $100-$250+/linear foot

Retaining wall failure is expensive and dangerous. Never hire the cheapest quote — the base preparation and drainage are invisible but critical. Compare your retaining wall quotes on Zollera to ensure nothing critical is missing.

Drainage Systems

French Drains

A trench filled with gravel containing a perforated pipe that redirects subsurface water. Cost: $25-$50/linear foot installed. Essential for yards with standing water or water flowing toward the foundation.

Channel Drains

Surface-mounted drains that collect and redirect water flowing across hardscaping (patios, driveways). Cost: $30-$60/linear foot installed. Necessary when hardscaping creates new water flow patterns.

Grading

Reshaping the ground surface to direct water away from structures. Cost: $1,000-$3,000 for typical residential re-grading. Should be done BEFORE any hardscaping or landscaping.

The Golden Rule

Address drainage before beautification. No amount of beautiful landscaping can overcome poor drainage. Water will find the path of least resistance — make sure that path leads away from your home and outdoor living spaces.
