Why flooring quotes are hard to compare
Flooring quotes have no standard format. One contractor quotes material and labor together. Another breaks out every line separately. One includes demo; another does not. One specifies the exact product; another says "hardwood, 4-inch plank." You can be looking at two very different scopes of work with similar bottom-line prices.

Material cost
Why it matters: Should list the exact product: manufacturer, collection, SKU, and grade. A material line that says "hardwood flooring" without specifics is a red flag.
Notes:
Waste factor / overage
Why it matters: Flooring material is ordered with 10-15% overage to account for cuts and waste. This is legitimate.
Notes:
Underlayment
Why it matters: Should specify the product type, not just "underlayment." Basic foam, acoustic underlayment, and moisture-barrier membrane serve different purposes at different price points.
Notes:
Demo and disposal
Why it matters: Removal of the existing floor and disposal of debris. If it is not in the quote, ask directly whether it is included or will be added.
Notes:
Subfloor prep
Why it matters: Basic leveling, grinding high spots, securing loose areas. If there are significant subfloor issues found after pulling the old floor, ask how they handle unexpected problems and whether that triggers a change order.
Notes:
Installation / labor
Why it matters: The cost to install the flooring itself, priced per square foot. Should cover the main floor area listed in the quote.
Notes:
Transitions, thresholds, and stair work
Why it matters: The strip where flooring meets flooring in doorways, thresholds at exterior doors, and any stair installation. Almost always extra.
Notes:
Furniture moving
Why it matters: Moving furniture out of the rooms is often not included. Clarify who is responsible and whether there is a charge.

Comparing quotes accurately
Before comparing final numbers, make sure each quote covers the same scope. Add demo, disposal, transitions, and subfloor prep to any quote that does not list them, then compare. A quote missing $500 in demo and $300 in transitions is not competitive with one that includes them. The material spec matters too: a quote using premium hardwood and one using a mid-grade product are not the same job.
