Your Plumbing Contractor Conversation Checklist
"Are you licensed and insured for plumbing work in this jurisdiction?"
Why it matters: Plumbing licensing is strict in most states because bad plumbing can contaminate drinking water or cause flooding. A licensed plumber has passed exams demonstrating knowledge of building codes and safe practices.
Notes:
"Is this a flat-rate or time-and-materials quote?"
Why it matters: Flat-rate means you pay one price regardless of how long it takes — you know the total upfront. Time-and-materials means you pay hourly labor plus parts — the total depends on how long the job takes.
Notes:
"Does the quote include all parts and materials?"
Why it matters: Some plumbers quote labor only and mark up parts 50-200% on top. Others include everything.
Notes:
"Will this require a permit, and is it included?"
Why it matters: Permits are required for most plumbing work beyond basic repairs: water heater replacement, repipes, drain line work, gas line work, and adding new fixtures. The permit ensures the work is inspected for code compliance.
Notes:
"What is your warranty on the labor?"
Why it matters: Parts usually have manufacturer warranties, but labor warranties come from the plumber. If a connection leaks three months after installation, you need to know if you're paying for the return visit.
Notes:
"What happens if you find additional problems once you start?"
Why it matters: Plumbing is hidden inside walls and under floors. Surprises are common: corroded pipes, improper previous work, code violations that must be corrected.
Notes:
"Can you provide a written estimate before starting?"
Why it matters: Verbal estimates are meaningless once the work is done. A written estimate is your only protection against price disputes.
Notes:
"How long will this take, and will I be without water?"
Why it matters: For any job that requires shutting off water, you need to know the duration. A family of four without water for a day is a real hardship — plan accordingly.
Notes:
"Do you clean up after the job?"
Why it matters: Plumbing work can involve cutting into walls, floors, or ceilings. Cleanup expectations should be clear: will they patch drywall? Haul away old fixtures? Clean up debris?.
Notes:
"What brand of fixtures/parts do you use?"
Why it matters: The quality range in plumbing parts is enormous. A $40 faucet cartridge and a $120 faucet cartridge look identical but have vastly different lifespans.
Notes:
"Do you offer emergency or after-hours service?"
Why it matters: Plumbing emergencies don't respect business hours. Knowing your plumber's availability before you need it avoids the panic of calling strangers at 2 AM when a pipe bursts.
Notes:
"Can you show me the problem before you fix it?"
Why it matters: For diagnostic work (finding a leak, diagnosing low water pressure), asking to see the problem ensures you're paying for real work, not invented issues..
