What to know before you call
Pest control operates differently from most home services. Most companies push toward annual service contracts. The chemicals used require licensing. And treatment effectiveness varies widely based on what pest you have, where it is living, and whether the company inspected before they treated.
These questions help you figure out whether the company is actually diagnosing your problem or just selling you a service contract.

Your Pest Control Contractor Conversation Checklist
"Are you licensed to apply pesticides in this state?"
Why it matters: Pesticide application requires a state license. An unlicensed applicator is applying regulated chemicals without the training to do it safely.
Notes:
"Will you do an inspection before recommending a treatment?"
Why it matters: The treatment depends on what pest you have, where it is living, and how extensive the infestation is. A company that quotes treatment before inspecting is guessing.
Notes:
"What specific pest did you find, and where is it coming from?"
Why it matters: After inspection, the technician should be able to tell you the species, the likely entry points, the harborage areas, and how they determined the extent of the infestation. Vague answers here mean vague treatment.
Notes:
"What chemicals will you use, and are they safe for children and pets?"
Why it matters: You have a right to know what is being applied in your home. The pesticide label (not just the product name) should be available.
Notes:
"What does the guarantee cover, and for how long?"
Why it matters: Pest control guarantees vary from "we will come back if you see activity within 30 days" to "unlimited free re-treatments if pests return within 12 months." Know exactly what triggers a free re-treatment and what does not.
Notes:
"How many follow-up visits are included?"
Why it matters: Many pest infestations require multiple treatments. Insects have life cycles that make single-visit treatment ineffective.
Notes:
"What exclusion work is included or recommended?"
Why it matters: Treating pests without addressing how they are getting in is treating symptoms. A quality pest control company will identify entry points and either seal them (if that is in their scope) or strongly recommend you have them sealed.
Notes:
"Is this a one-time treatment or do you require a service contract?"
Why it matters: Some pests (termites, bed bugs) realistically need ongoing protection. Many others (a mouse, a wasp nest, seasonal ants) can be addressed with one or two targeted treatments.
Notes:
"What is your termite protection program, and do you offer a bond?"
Why it matters: Termites deserve specific attention. If you have termites, ask about retreatment bonds (which guarantee retreatment if termites return), damage repair coverage, and what inspection schedule is included.
Notes:
"Can I see your most recent pest control license and insurance certificate?"
Why it matters: License verifies they are authorized to apply pesticides. Insurance protects you if treatment damages your property or causes a health incident.
Notes:
"What preparation do I need to do before treatment?"
Why it matters: Some treatments require significant preparation: emptying cabinets, removing pets, covering aquariums, being away from the home for a number of hours. Know this before the day of treatment.
Notes:
"What is the cancellation policy on your service contract?"
Why it matters: Annual contracts often have cancellation fees or require advance notice. Read this before signing, not after.

Before you sign
Insist on an inspection before signing anything. Get the treatment plan, guarantee terms, and cancellation policy in writing. And ask specifically what will be done to address entry points, not just the pests currently inside.
