What to know before you call
Insulation performance is about two things: R-value (thermal resistance) and air sealing. R-value limits conduction heat loss. Air sealing limits convection (air movement carrying heat). You can have R-60 in your attic and lose most of the benefit through air gaps around light fixtures, plumbing penetrations, and the attic hatch.
These questions identify contractors who understand both variables.

Your Insulation Contractor Conversation Checklist
"What R-value are you targeting for each location, and is that appropriate for my climate zone?"
Why it matters: The Department of Energy publishes recommended R-values by climate zone and location (attic, walls, floors, crawlspace). Climate zone 4 (central US) needs R-49 to R-60 in the attic.
Notes:
"Does this project include air sealing before insulation?"
Why it matters: Air sealing and insulation are separate scopes that are often bundled but sometimes not. Air sealing should precede insulation in attics: sealing top plates, plumbing penetrations, recessed light fixtures, and the attic hatch before blowing in insulation.
Notes:
"What insulation type will you use in each location, and why?"
Why it matters: Attic: blown cellulose or blown fiberglass is standard. Wall cavity: batts, blown-in, or spray foam each have different performance profiles.
Notes:
"How do you handle existing insulation - remove or add on top?"
Why it matters: For attics, adding blown insulation over existing batt insulation is typically fine as long as the existing insulation is dry and not contaminated. For walls, existing insulation affects what technique is feasible.
Notes:
"How do you prevent moisture problems in the attic or wall cavities?"
Why it matters: Insulation changes how heat and moisture move through the building envelope. Adding insulation without understanding vapor flow can create condensation problems.
Notes:
"Is your crew trained and certified?"
Why it matters: Spray foam in particular requires trained installation. Improper spray foam ratios and temperatures produce off-ratio foam that does not cure correctly and may have odor, off-gassing, or structural problems.
Notes:
"Is a permit required?"
Why it matters: Adding insulation typically does not require a permit. But if work involves changing the thermal boundary (converting an unconditioned attic to conditioned space, insulating a crawlspace to change it from unconditioned to conditioned) a permit may be required.
Notes:
"How do you verify actual installed R-value after the job?"
Why it matters: Blown insulation settles over time. The installed depth and density determine the actual R-value.
Notes:
"Will you check for and address any existing moisture or pest issues before insulating?"
Why it matters: Installing insulation over a moisture problem seals the problem in. Pest damage, mold, or evidence of roof leaks should be addressed before insulation goes in.
Notes:
"Does your quote include cleanup and disposal?"
Why it matters: Old insulation removal (if applicable) and cleanup of the work area should be in the scope..
Notes:
"Are there any rebates or tax credits available for this work?"
Why it matters: The Inflation Reduction Act (as of 2024) provides a 30% tax credit on air sealing and insulation costs up to $1,200 per year. Some utilities also offer rebates.
Notes:
"What is the payment schedule?"
Why it matters: Insulation jobs are typically one or two days. Standard payment on completion is reasonable for smaller jobs.

Before you hire
Confirm air sealing is included in any attic insulation scope. Verify R-value targets against DOE recommendations for your climate zone. And ask specifically what happens if they find moisture or pest damage before they start.
