10 Concrete Mistakes That Lead to Cracking, Spalling, and Replacement

Concrete failures are permanent. The fix is always removal and replacement.

Where concrete jobs fail

Concrete failures manifest as cracking, surface spalling, heaving, or settlement. Almost all of them trace back to one of five variables: insufficient base preparation, wrong mix spec, no air entrainment in freeze-thaw climates, reinforcement not properly positioned, or no control joints. All five are invisible in the finished slab.

The 10 pitfalls

Inadequate base preparation

Concrete is only as stable as what is under it.

Too much water added to the mix

Excess water weakens concrete.

No air entrainment in freeze-thaw climates

Without entrained air, water in the concrete surface pores expands when it freezes and pops the surface.

Wire mesh sitting on the ground

Reinforcement resting on the gravel base before the pour gets pushed further down during the pour.

No control joints

Concrete shrinks as it cures and expands and contracts with temperature.

Finishing while bleed water is still on the surface

Bleed water is water that rises to the concrete surface after the pour.

No curing or premature drying

Concrete that dries too fast (in hot, dry, or windy conditions without curing) loses the moisture it needs to reach design strength.

Wrong slab thickness for the use case

A 3-inch driveway slab will not support car weight for many years.

Insufficient concrete PSI for the application

Lower-PSI concrete is cheaper.

Paying in full before the pour

Once the concrete is in the ground, your leverage evaporates.

The bottom line

Concrete failures are not fixable without demo and replacement. All the variables that determine whether concrete lasts are set before or during the pour. Get PSI, base depth, control joints, and curing method in writing. Do not release final payment until the job passes your inspection.
